LTN - The Good, The Bad and whatever...

Early start this morning to get my 1040 flight from LTN to BTS. I started ridiculously early and was at LTN a full hour before check in opened.
First of all, the fact that Easyjet now does not specifically allocate check-in desks to flights is good. There were few queues this morning. Unfortunately, the rigid rule of not being able to check in more than two hours ahead is a bit of a pain, so I had the chance to get the full Luton Airport experience of litter strewn tables, which were almost a match for the mess outside the terminal.
Up the shiny new escalator to the new departures area (opened on Friday 1 July), to find a proud manager picking up litter. Air conditioning appeared to be a little erratic and was not working at all in WH Smith's shop. The departures area itself is a clean and relatively uncluttered space, spoiled only by "pod" type shops for Sunglasses Hut, Starbucks and others. Still, if they keep people moving there may be enough room. On this quiet Monday morning it was fine, but looking around I don't see a great improvement in the quantity of seating, even if the quality is in some ways improved. I say in some ways, as the vinyl seats and seat backs will of course make everyone rather sweaty. No doubt the bean counters told them that the vinyl is harder wearing than a cloth cover.
At one end there is a bright, glass-ceilinged area which looks great, but if the aircon fails on a hot day it will prove very uncomfortable.
And why is it that LTN security staff are the most unhelpful? Once again, asking for a tray in which to put my jacket, I was made to feel as if I was being unreasonable!
